Small Batches Are Not a Problem – How South China's Flexible Manufacturing Serves Nordic SMEs

"Our order is only 500 pieces. Will any Chinese factory take it?" This is a question I hear often.
The answer is: yes, but you need to find the right partner.
The Pearl River Delta – particularly Guangzhou, Foshan, Dongguan, and Shenzhen – is home to the world's densest concentration of manufacturing businesses. Alongside the large factories serving global brands, there are countless small and medium-sized factories that are flexible, responsive, and willing to experiment with new product categories. For "small-volume, multi-category" needs, these factories are often the better choice.

A few years ago, I worked with a factory in Dongguan specializing in smart home accessories. They were not focused on large order volumes, but rather on building experience and reputation through diverse projects. When a Nordic client approached them with a trial order of just 200 smart locks, the factory not only accepted it but also adjusted its production schedule to accommodate the request.
The key lies in how you communicate. Large factories have standardized processes and are often uninterested in low-volume orders. But the Pearl River Delta is full of smaller, flexible factories that are willing to take small orders – and even support multiple rounds of prototyping modifications. The issue is never whether there are factories willing to do the work. It is whether the client knows where to find them, and once found, whether communication goes smoothly.
As a local liaison, part of my value is helping clients identify these "hidden champions." One factory may have never done export business, but its product quality is excellent. Another may be small, but happens to have a specific process the client needs. This information is difficult to find online, but with a long-established supply chain network, it becomes accessible.
Small batches are not a barrier. They are the right way for Nordic SMEs to leverage China's manufacturing capabilities. The key is finding a factory willing to move at your pace – and a local partner who speaks both languages and understands both sides.
